Q: Hey! How can anyone be dopey enough to fall for those scam letters about a bank account in Africa. Nobody would really send those bad guys money to get a share of some multi-million dollar bank account, would they?
A: In a word, yup. You'll have a better understanding of what makes it seem safe by reading the following notice to bankers. In a nutshell, the bad guys send you a certified check to cover "taxes and expenses," and your bank makes the funds available before you send them out a penny! Sound foolproof? Sure. BUT, here's what really happens. Your bank will advance money against a certified check before it reaches the other bank. The instructions from the bad guys tell you to wire the amount they need when your bank tells you the funds are available. Most people think this is the same as clearing the other guy's bank. It isn't. When the forgery of the "certified " check is discovered, sometimes several weeks later, the money will be taken back from you by your bank. However, the wire which you sent out, is now long gone and irretrievable.
